Bayern Munich cannot lose today vs. Hoffenheim…it just cannot happen!
We all know, however, that there have been some painful losses over the years — some that have even stuck with us for weeks, months,
or even years!
Here are some of the losses that stuck with us:
1) Manchester United 2–1 Bayern Munich — Champions League final, 1999: Bayern led until stoppage time before conceding two late goals to lose the European Cup in dramatic fashion—one of football’s most famous collapses.
2) Chelsea 1–1 Bayern Munich (4–3 pens) — Champions League final, 2012: Played in Munich, Bayern equalized late and dominated but lost on penalties, completing a season of finishing runner-up in all major competitions.
3) Inter Milan 2–0 Bayern Munich — Champions League final, 2010: A disciplined Inter side denied Bayern the title, adding to the club’s list of painful final defeats in Europe.
4) FC Porto 2–1 Bayern Munich — European Cup final, 1987: Another European final Bayern led but ultimately lost, deepening their reputation for heartbreaking near-misses in this era.
5) Aston Villa 1–0 Bayern Munich — European Cup final, 1982: A shock defeat to underdogs Aston Villa marked one of Bayern’s earliest major continental disappointments.
6) Borussia Mönchengladbach 5–0 Bayern Munich — DFB-Pokal, 2021: Bayern’s heaviest ever German Cup defeat and biggest loss in 43 years, making it one of the most shocking modern results.
7) Fortuna Düsseldorf 7–1 Bayern Munich — Bundesliga, 1978: One of the club’s worst league thrashings and referenced as their last defeat by a five-goal margin before 2021.
8) Schalke 04 7–0 Bayern Munich — Bundesliga, 1976: Still cited as Bayern’s record league defeat, underscoring how rare such heavy losses are in club history.
9) Real Madrid 4–0 Bayern Munich— Champions League semifinal, 2014/15: A crushing home defeat ended Bayern’s title defense and saw Madrid win the tie 5–0 on aggregate.
10) FC St. Pauli 2–1 Bayern Munich — Bundesliga, 2001/02: A relegation-bound underdog beating the reigning European champions ranks among Bayern’s most humiliating domestic upsets.
11) Real Madrid 4-3 Bayern Munich — Champions League 2017/18: Controversy and Cristiano Ronaldo…what more do you need?
12) Paris Saint-Germain 3-3 Bayern Munich (PSG advances on away goals) — Champions League, 2020/21: Robert Lewandowski being injured might have been all that stood between the Bavarians and another UCL title — and it was the after the second leg where Hansi Flick announced he was leaving the team. A calamitous day, indeed.
