With Richard Hughes officially out at Liverpool, many will expect a quick appointment of his successor given his departure has been known going back at least to the end of last season. However, with the club not immediately announcing a new sporting director, there’s some room for speculation and rumour mongering.
The latest out of Germany has the Reds looking at Eintracht Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krosche as a top option. The 45-year-old Krosche is under contract with the Bundesliga side
until 2028 but is believed to have a release clause allowing him to join a handful of top European clubs—including Liverpool—for around €3M.
Some of the chatter, though, seems to have more to do with Krosche facing heavy criticism at Frankfurt following their own difficult summer transfer window, one that saw the club scrambling late to get in the signings they needed to avoid writing off the season before it had properly gotten under way. Sound familiar?
In any case, a handful of late loan deals following a crisis meeting of Frankfurt upper management seems to have everyone back on the same page for the time being at least, and Krosche is widely regarded as key to Frankfurt’s revival in recent seasons—at least until things started to fall apart over the past 12 or so months.
It’s hard to judge a potential sporting director hire in the same way one might a player, but hopefully whoever it is the Reds are targeting for the job can be lined up shortly and get to work laying the foundations for future transfer windows and hopefully fixing some of the squad mess that Hughes has left in his wake.
