Yesterday Bill Belichick announced that UNC’s defensive coordinator Steve Belichick is on medical leave due to an undisclosed illness. During Belichick’s announcement, he stated that Steve would return “as soon as possible,” leaving his potential return timeline a bit of a mystery.
What’s notable about this announcement is something that UNC fans have had to adapt to, which is Bill Belichick’s unwillingness to say more than he feels like he has to. In all fairness, it could be that he really doesn’t
know when his son will return to his post, but it also wouldn’t be surprising if he knows when Steve should return and he just won’t say. It’s a tiresome schtick, and of course, the most important thing above all else is that Steve recovers properly, but ultimately all we can assume is that he may not return in time for UNC’s trip to Dublin to face off against TCU on August 29th.
That said, how bad is this for UNC? While it seems bad on the surface, it is worth noting that Bill Belichick is more than capable of leading the defensive unit in his son’s absence. The issue, though, is that he has never acted as defensive coordinator for a college team before, but ideally he has been around the team long enough now to where it shouldn’t be an issue. Still, ideally Steve won’t miss much time, because otherwise it just adds another layer of chaos to the 2026 Carolina football season.
