The NFL suspended San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw for one game after a headbutt on Seattle Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones:
According to the league, Greenlaw was in violation of Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which applies to “any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.”
Greenlaw will be eligible to return to the 49ers’ active roster on Tuesday, October 20, following the team’s October 19 game against the Washington Commanders.
Under the Collective
Bargaining Agreement, Greenlaw may appeal the suspension. Any appeal will be heard and decided upon by either Derrick Brooks, Jordy Nelson, Ron Rivera, or James Thrash, the hearing officers jointly appointed and compensated by the NFL and NFLPA to decide appeals of on-field player discipline.
There was some good back-and-forth about whether there would be any further punishment for Greenlaw.
If Greenlaw was a first-time offender, perhaps he would’ve gotten away with it. But that feels like a stretch. His last name and history don’t help Dre in this instance, but it’s hard to imagine anybody else not receiving a similar punishment.
So, it’ll be Jaden Dugger and Luke Gifford against Washington. Dugger was great against the Seahawks and played like a player who shouldn’t come off the field. Gifford had some issues playing on the line of scrimmage. If Nick Bosa returns, the 49ers may be able to play their 5-man fronts without Gifford.
