So that Jonah Coleman is fun to watch, eh?
Yes, it’s the preseason and the first game against what seems like a bad Atlanta Falcons team. But in his first NFL game, the rookie running back from Washington put on quite the display.
Coleman showed what he’s been flashing in training camp. A strong runner between the tackles with good vision and patience. On top of that, he can pass block. The one aspect of Coleman’s game we really didn’t see on Friday is pass-catching, but that will come.
When asked for
his impressions of Coleman, Broncos head coach Sean Payton said to the media after the game:
“Just what we’ve been seeing, right? And then you see enough of it, and you’re like, all right. Look, he’s had a good camp, and I liked his balance coming out of some of the tackles. I thought overall, the group had a good night.”
Coleman obviously makes the Denver offense better. But more importantly, he makes the running back room better. The triumvirate of Coleman, J.K. Dobbins, and RJ Harvey has the potential to be dangerous. There’s the health issue, especially for Dobbins, in all of this. But if the Broncos consistently and effectively run the ball this season, the offense will be even harder to defend. Plus, it’ll make Bo Nix and the passing game even better.
The fact that Coleman carried over what he’s been doing in training camp to the first preseason game is a positive development. Now, if the rookie can continue to build on this and stay consistent, he’s going to play a big role in this offense and in the success the Broncos expect this season.
