Another excerpt from James Rodríguez’s Netflix documentary looking back on his football career to date. Though it is by no means done — the Colombian has stated his desire to continue after this summer’s World Cup, following his departure from MLS club Minnesota United — it is a good time for reflection, twelve years after That Kick launched him into the stratosphere.
Among the topics was James’ move from Real Madrid to Bayern Munich in 2017, at a time when Premier League giant Manchester United was also
calling.
The following excerpt was captured and transcribed from James’ new Netflix documentary by @iMiaSanMia:
“I was going to join Manchester United, and Jorge (Mendes) said to me, ‘Do you want to go to Bayern?’ And I said, ‘Where am I going to play? there’s Ribéry, Robben…’ He said, ‘Carlo asked for you.’
“Carlo called me, and I said, ‘I think I’m going to Manchester.‘ And he replied, ‘What Manchester? Manchester are dead. You have to come here with me.’
“I think it was a good decision to go to Bayern Munich.”
(Bayern had Thomas Müller, too.)
Ironically, James did not get to play for long with the man who recruited him to Bavaria. Ancelotti was unceremoniously sacked before October of that season after a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of PSG and playing time was not easy to juggle for Bayern’s attacking stars that season. Things have rarely gone to plan for the Colombian virtuoso after that glorious 2014 World Cup goal…but James has a chance to hit another high note this summer.
