The Colorado Rockies head east for their penultimate road trip of the season — there are just 19 games left, if you can believe that! They face old friend Ryan McMahon (and freshly-activated Aaron Judge) and the New York Yankees for a three game set before heading to Detroit to face the Tigers for a three-game weekend set.
The Rockies just finished a 3-3 homestand after taking two of three from the Baltimore Orioles and dropping two of three to the St. Louis Cardinals. They need to go 8-11 in their
final 19 games to avoid their fourth straight 100-loss season.
This also gives NL Rookie of the Year candidate TJ Rumfield a chance to face the team that traded him, as well as show off under the bright lights of the Bronx.
Rumfield ranks third in the NL (fourth in MLB) with a .389 BOP and sixth in the NL (ninth in MLB) with a .299 batting average. He and Yordan Alvarez are the only qualified players with a batting average greater than .290 and an OBP greater than .308. Additionally, he leads all qualified rookies in batting average, OBP and OPS (.850) while ranking second in hits (146). He also ranks second among NL rookies in bWAR (3.6), slugging percentage (.460) and total bases (225). Rumfield is also just two shy of tying Dexter Fowler for the most walks by a rookie in franchise history.
Gabriel Hughes will be taking the mound for the Rockies, still searching for his elusive first win of the season. Hughes is coming off a start where he pitched 4.2 innings and allowed one run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. He also snapped a streak of five-straight starts with one home run allowed, and his four strikeouts were the most in an outing since August 4th against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Hughes will face potential Cy Young candidate Cam Schlittler. The second-year right-hander debuted last July and burst onto the scene, posting a 4-3 record and 2.96 ERA through 14 starts. He was also a darling of the postseason, going 1-1 with a 1.26 ERA in two starts. This year, Schlittler is 12-6 with a 2.04 ERA across 29 starts. In his last outing against the Los Angeles Angels, Schlittler allowed just one run — a solo home run in the seventh — on two hits nine strikeouts across eight innings of work. Oh, and he also did it on 99 pitches (71 strikes).
