Blue Jays Little Cubs Lots
As well as being a terrible baseball game, Vlad Guerrero left the game with a back issue after a swing. They are saying he will play tomorrow, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
There are games like this, but I really didn’t expect it from Kevin Gausman. Kevin had four walks in May. Well, he had four walks in the first inning of this one. And five hits, seven runs.
His ERA was 3.41 entering the game and 4.04 exiting.
He ended up going two innings, seven hits, seven earned, four walks
and three strikeouts. In the two innings he threw 68 pitches.
Kevin could have been helped out by Jesús Sánchez, who, with one out and two runners on base, had a catchable fly ball down the right field line. The wall is very close to the foul line and he slowed and was obviously scared of hitting the wall. A better outfielder would have gone into a slide and made the catch. That would have helped. We still would have lost and likely lost bad, but less bad.
Beyond that….well not much else mattered. Springer had 2 hits, including a home run. Nathan Lukes, Davis Schneider and Andres Gimenez each had a hit. Five hits in all, and no walks.
We used six relievers (and Myles Straw), when we really needed to let the pen have a rest. Brandon Fisher (1 inning), Tommy Nance (1.1 innings), Brendon Little (1 inning, 4 earned, 3 walks), Spencer Myles (0.2 innings) and Tyler Rogers (0.2 innings, 5 runs, none earned because of a Davis Schneider).
Myles Straw got the last four outs, giving up four hits and a walk.
No Jays of the Day.
Other Award: Gausman (-0.40 WPA).
Tomorrow (can’t be as bad as today) is another day game, 2:20 again. Patrick Corbin (2-3, 4.57) vs. Colin Rea (5-5, 5.35).
