WWE’s “Big Four” annual pay-per-view events are traditionally recognized as WrestleMania, SummerSlam, Royal Rumble, and Survivor Series. However, modern fans may be tempted to replace Survivor Series with a more popular concept like Money in the Bank.
It turns out that WWE Champion Cody Rhodes is also very happy to drop Survivor Series out of that mix. However, instead of adding Money in the Bank, he thinks WWE’s international “Clash” PLE is now…a Big Three PLE?
Here is how he explained it during an
interview on ESPN’s UnSportsmanLike, where he happened to be promoting this Sunday’s (May 31) Clash In Italy event, of course.
“I think Clash is sneaking up as one of WWE’s big four PLEs. The fact that it’s somewhere new international each year. And Italy, I think they’re up to the task…
Yeah, it’s very bold…I think I wouldn’t put Survivor Series there anymore. These are my personal picks. I would almost say, maybe Money in the Bank, but I think Clash is [becoming a top WWE PLE] because of the international appeal of it…it’s moving all around. I like that it gives every city an opportunity to be the best Clash.
…I don’t want to use Money in the Bank. I’m gonna give you my big three: WrestleMania, SummerSlam, Clash. Right now, that’s my big three.”
The hosts couldn’t believe that Rhodes left out Royal Rumble. He made sure to add it back in, though apparently still ranking it after Clash.
“Now I’m screwed. It’s early, guys! Watch this. Let me give you my big four. WrestleMania, SummerSlam, Clash, and then obviously the Royal Rumble. There it is. And I won the Royal Rumble twice, I should absolutely be saying the Royal Rumble.”
Well, Clash In Italy is a loaded card that seems worthy of Cody’s praise here, so it’s a good job of promotion on his part. However, I think there is still quite a ways to go before Clash makes the Big Four list for WWE fans, and it’s certainly not surpassing Royal Rumble in the hierarchy.
Do you agree with Rhodes about WWE’s annual international Clash approaching Big 4 status? Let me know in the comments below, Cagesiders.
