Sometimes it’s not always about what has to change, but rather how much time is needed to implement the changes. That seems to be the case for Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich side since joining in 2024.
Despite winning the Bundesliga, the Belgian manager’s appointment remained polarizing for fans—especially after an inconsistent first season at the helm, crashing out early in the DFB-Pokal and UEFA Champions League again. However, after one and a half seasons behind the wheel, Kompany is steering Bayern straight to destination silverware.
In a recent interview, Konrad Laimer, one of Bayern’s standout players this season attempted to explain the difference between Kompany’s first season in charge and this season.
“I don’t think things have changed that much,” explained Laimer (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We’ve obviously had games – last season and this season – which we can learn from and help us get better. We’re still capable of improving, and when you work together for longer, you obviously get better at certain routines. You have a better understanding of what the person next to you is doing. I think that’s worked really well in many games.”
Laimer echoes the importance of time. In modern football, managers are often given the opportunity to come into a new club to implement change. What they aren’t always given is time; a fatal flaw in many case, as change doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, as Kompany has proved at Bayern. But when it clicks, the wait is well worth the result.
