Canelo Alvarez is ready to chase gold again.
The boxing legend successfully weighed in for what will be the 69th fight of his storied career as he challenges undefeated champion Christian Mbilli for the WBC super middleweight title Saturday at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Canelo weighed in at 167.6 pounds, while Mbilli tipped the scales at 167.8 pounds.
When Canelo was asked about the magnitude of the fight at Friday’s ceremonial weigh-ins, he said (via Spanish-to-English translation), “This
is very important for me. I’ve been doing this for the last 21 years. I won my first title 16 years ago, so it’s very important for me to be here to take that title and obviously get back into that world championship corner.”
“My experience is obviously very different and he’s never faced anybody like me,” he added. “So tomorrow, I’m going to teach him exactly what it is to face somebody like me.”
Canelo (63-3-2) seeks to become WBC super middleweight champion again with a win against Mbilli (29-0-1), who was elevated to undisputed status following the retirement of Terence Crawford and a bout against Hamzah Sheeraz failing to materialize. Crawford defeated Canelo via unanimous decision in September 2025 to claim the WBC title, among other belts, but hung up the gloves despite Canelo exercising a rematch clause.
Mbilli won an interim belt via a first-round knockout over Maciej Sulecki, and retained it in his first defense against Lester Martinez via split draw on the Canelo vs. Crawford undercard.
“You’re going to see on Saturday what’s going to happen,” Mbilli said. “Tomorrow night I’m going to beat him everywhere. Best conditioning, best punch, best technique, I’m going to put all my 100 percent on my fight.”
“The fight of the decade, the fight of the year, it will be an amazing fight,” he added.
