Its beginning to sound like a broken record, but Ole Miss football is about to play in its biggest game in program history this week.
No. 6 Ole Miss (13-1) and No. 10 Miami (12-2) will kickoff in the national
semifinal of the College Football Playoff on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CT. It should be recorded, must see TV, maybe just take the entire day off from work to make sure you don’t get caught in traffic or make whatever plans to ensure you can have your lucky seat in the living room, man cave or wherever you watch games. This is the penultimate game of the season, and the Rebels are on an absolute heater right now.
A first round win against Tulane was a blow out exactly what fans expected and hoped for, but it was significant as it was the first game of Pete Golding’s tenure as the Rebels head coach. Posting a 41-10 win in the Vaught was only a meager 4-point difference from earlier in the season, but it was complete domination both times to be honest.
The quarterfinals win over Georgia was the stuff of dreams for many Ole Miss fans. I have heard time and again from friends who were in attendance that it was the greatest Ole Miss football game ever to see in person. The crowd atmosphere, the significance of the win, the fourth quarter comeback and the final nail in the coffin field goal created a movie magic type of victory for the Rebels.
Miami meanwhile has played the underdog role in both its games with very few outside of its locker room and fanbase believing the Hurricanes would go into Kyle Field and come out victorious. Then the upset of Ohio State delivered the biggest shocker of this playoffs – a double digit seed climbing into the national semi-final.
There’s been much of the national media who feel Miami is playing the best football in the country right now. Maybe they are, but I cannot fathom anyone counting Ole Miss completely out at this point. Oddsmakers currently have Miami as a -3.5 favorite.
