Newcastle United has already lost several experienced players from last year’s XI this summer, leaving Eddie Howe with fewer established performers inside the squad.
One of the most veteran players, Dan Burn, has grown more and more important for the club since arriving in Tyneside, earning him a call-up for the World Cup with third-place-game-bound England.
Now, with the Three Lions coming home following an underwhelming semifinal loss to Argentina, a fresh report is suggesting that Newcastle might
have a clear route to keep Burn at St. James’ Park for the rest of his career.
First off, according to Chronicle Live’s Lee Ryder, Newcastle sources have dismissed suggestions Burn could be sold to Aston Villa.
“Newcastle United sources have dismissed talk that Dan Burn could be sold to Aston Villa,” Ryder reported.
More importantly, per Ryder, Burn is believed to have one year remaining on his current contract, but Newcastle holds an option to extend his deal through 2028.
“The Magpies also have an option to extend Burn’s current deal to 2028, which would almost certainly mean the Carabao Cup hero would finish his career at the top with Newcastle,” Ryder wrote.
Newcastle may also revisit Burn’s contract situation after his performances for England at the World Cup, where the defender completed a remarkable rise from non-league soccer to the international stage.
Burn joined Newcastle from Brighton for €15 million (£13 million) in 2022 while the club was at the bottom of the Premier League. He has since become one of Newcastle’s most dependable defenders, helping the club win the 2025 Carabao Cup and emerging as a potential future captain if Bruno Guimaraes leaves.
