Newcastle United has entered a new era under manager Matthias Jaissle after Eddie Howe’s abrupt exit this summer, with several senior players now adapting to a different head coach and a significantly reshaped squad.
Veteran midfielder Joelinton, who arrived before Howe landed the head coaching job in 2021, has paid tribute to the former Magpies’ manager and the influence he had on his career while making clear that his focus has shifted toward what Newcastle can achieve under Jaissle.
Speaking to
Chronicle Live, the Brazilian credited Howe with transforming his fortunes at St James’ Park.
“He trusted me from day one, and I will always be grateful for everything he did for me,” Joelinton said. “He improved my game a lot and gave me the chance to play midfield. He always trusted me, so I just have good things to say about Eddie, and I wish him all the best for the future.”
Howe’s decision to move Joelinton from attack into midfield became one of the defining changes of his Newcastle tenure, helping the former Hoffenheim player establish himself as a Brazil international and key member of the squad.
“I think everyone will remember him as a great head coach who had a great time here,” Joelinton said. “He was not only a great head coach but a great man as well.”
However, the Newcastle vice-captain stressed that the club must now move forward.
“Now we move on as a club at Newcastle because football never stops,” Joelinton said. “We hope to achieve great things with Matthias Jaissle now. He is a young coach with great ideas; he has had success before, so it is a great addition for this club. I hope he can keep on improving the team and take us to the next level.”
Joelinton has yet to play this season while recovering from a quad injury.
