The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback situation is one that is under a microscope for the third consecutive offseason.
After 2024 featured the additions of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields and the departure of Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh signed Aaron Rodgers to be its quarterback for the 2025 season. Rodgers threw 24 touchdowns to seven interceptions en route to leading the Steelers to the AFC North title, their first since 2020.
While Rodgers initially noted that 2025 would likely be his last year, he
left the door open for a return in 2026. However, he has yet to make a commitment for 2026.
In an appearance on Deebo and Joe, Ben Roethlisberger was asked about the quarterback situation, and noted that he would like to see Will Howard get a shot to start if Rodgers doesn’t return.
“I’m a big Will Howard fan,” he said. “I would love to give Will Howard a chance.”
Rodgers himself went to bat on behalf of Howard in an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show earlier this month.
“I’m a big Will Howard, not just fan as a human, but believer as a player,” Rodgers said. “And when his time comes, he’s going to be more than capable of being, not just a consistent starter, but a guy who can stick in the league for a long, long time.”
Howard and Mason Rudolph are the only two quarterbacks on the Steelers’ roster. He helped lead Ohio State to a National Championship in the 2024 season, throwing for over 4,000 yards and 35 touchdowns.
