This week, the Green Bay Packers added Laken Tomlinson, formerly on the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad, to their 53-man roster, and Mekhi Becton Sr., previously on the street, to their practice squad. With a full roster, both on the 53 and practice squad, the Packers needed to make two corresponding roster moves to make room for the Tomlinson and Becton additions.
On Monday, the team announced that they have placed right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele, who had a complete tear of his Patellar tendon, on the injured
reserve. It’s unlikely that Bako-Bewele will play another game for the Packers in 2026, and they have a big decision to make about his future next offseason. The ZBB, who was not designated to return from the IR, makes space for the addition of Tomlinson.
To add Becton as Green Bay’s fifth practice squad offensive lineman, the Packers released defensive tackle Eric Johnson II, who was the only interior lineman on Green Bay’s practice squad. The Packers are a bit “oversigned” at the defensive tackle position on the 53-man roster, as they have seven players on the active roster, but with 15 offensive linemen in practice now, they’re clearly “oversigned” at the offensive line position, too.
For what it’s worth, there’s some crossover between Tomlinson, Becton and the Packers’ offensive scheme. Tomlinson was in San Francisco when Green Bay offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich was the 49ers’ assistant offensive line coach from 2017 to 2018. Tomlinson also played under offensive coordinators Mike LaFleur, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur’s brother, and Nathaniel Hackett, Green Bay’s offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2021, in the 2022 and 2023 seasons for the New York Jets. Becton was also a Jet for two years under Mike LaFleur (2021 and 2022).
