According to a report from Kicker journalist Georg Holzner (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is going to let his body make the decision on whether or not he plays next season:
Bayern bosses would welcome another year with Manuel Neuer, but the goalkeeper will base his decision solely on his physical condition. Neuer has decided that another experience abroad, like Thomas Müller’s in Vancouver, is out of the question for him. He wants to end his career at FC Bayern,
whether at the end of this season or in the future.
Should Neuer sign a one-year contract extension until 2027, he would agree to give Urbig even more playing time next season to further develop his potential successor. If Neuer does not extend his contract, Bayern would at least consider the goalkeeper market. Daniel Peretz and Alexander Nübel are not in the club’s plans. Bayern are trying to find a permanent solution for both keepers in the summer when their loan spells end.
BFW Analysis
If Neuer was to comeback, less games would be a requirement. To truly have a transition to Jonas Urbig, Neuer would have to cede more games from his workload.
Neuer, who has rushed back from injuries twice so far in 2026, might be feeling the tight clenches of retirement squeezing him a bit. The captain still has great ability, but Father Times comes for us all. If he can go one more season, a lesser workload and a bigger mentorship role could be a winning formula.
