Bayern Munich put away RB Leipzig 3-0 on a snow-swept Sunday night as the Frauen-Bundesliga returned to action.
A tight one-two between Momoko Tanikawa and Georgia Stanway forced a handball in the box in just the fifth minute, and Tanikawa stepped up once more as Bayern’s penalty taker. PKs had been just a bit of a sore spot for the Bavarians prior to Tanikawa taking over for the previous effort, and this time she was just as true: firing not a blazer, but a well-placed finish into the lower corner
for a change of pace.
Bundesliga assists maestro Klara Bühl nearly fashioned a couple of assists en route to Bayern’s second, but it was not until past the hour mark that Franziska Kett fired a deflected shot that pinballed its way through traffic before banking into the back of the net. Leipzig had had their chances to equalize before that but could not take them, and it was that kind of night — everything chaotic, the ball and players bounding around the wintry turf uncertainly, every chance that emerged up for anyone to grab.
Bayern’s third came after Bühl delivered a dangerous ball into the box from a free kick, and once again after several ricochets it found itself at the foot of a Bayern player. This time Jovana Damnjanović tucked it home into an empty net and that was that. 3-0, and the league leaders looking as inevitable as ever.
