Manuel Neuer has enjoyed a strong start to the season in Bayern Munich’s nine straight wins across all competitions to start off the 2025/26 campaign. In the process of getting off to a flying start, the veteran
keeper has been able to record three clean sheets and there was hardly anything the Bayern captain could’ve have done for a majority of the eight goals that have been conceded while he’s been in goal.
While he has had his struggles with various injury problems in recent seasons, Neuer has been looking fit and healthy while performing at a high level close to what his peak was in his younger years. At 39 years of age, the time when he’s going to have to call it quits altogether is looming large somewhere around the corner, but he’s proving that he might still have a decent chunk of time left before that day comes.
Per information from Sport Bild’s Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich is not entirely closed off to the idea of offering Neuer another contract extension for another season, so long as the keeper remains fully fit, healthy, and keeps performing the way he’s been performing so far this season. Consistent with the club’s normal policy, they would only offer him a one-year extension due to being over the age of 30, though there have been multiple exceptions to that rule. Nonetheless, both Neuer and Sven Ulreich have had their contracts extended by a year multiple times in recent seasons.
In addition to the possibility of a Bayern extension being on the table, Neuer is also not entirely closed off to making a return to the German national team for next summer’s FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canda, and Mexico if he is needed by Julian Nagelsmann and company. He had previously thrown cold water on the rumors that he was potentially coming out of retirement for Die Mannshcaft, but it is very much a topic that he recently discussed with Rudi Völler. Injuries can certainly happen to other keepers in the national team, and there’s a lot of football to be played before next summer’s tournament, so nothing is ruled out 100% at this point.
