It’s nice taking care of business.
#3 LSU (4-0) did what it was supposed to do, beating up on an FCS opponent, Southeastern, 56-10. It was by far and away LSU’s best offensive output all season, while the starters on this dominant LSU defense limited the Lions to 30 yards in the first half, before they got to clock out early.
Did LSU actually solve their problems on offense, or were they just playing an FCS team tonight? Like all things, the answer is somewhere in the middle.
Garrett Nussmeier looked
like a Heisman contender/future first round pick, completing 25 of 31 passes for 273 yards and three touchdowns, and his numbers could have been even better had it not been for four drops (one by Barion Brown, one by Aaron Anderson, and two by Nic Anderson) in the first half; Nussmeier also used his legs some tonight, and even scrambled for 26 yards, a new career-long for him.
Ju’Juan Johnson might have had a breakthrough tonight, running the ball eight times for 43 yards and scored two touchdowns. The Tiger offensive line still leaves something to be desired when it comes to run blocking, but Johnson was able to give LSU a spark.
Speaking of that LSU offensive line, tonight might have been the breaking point for Brian Kelly. Redshirt freshmen Weston Davis, who has been starting at right tackle this season, got pulled midway through the game and was replaced by DJ Chester. Unfortunately for LSU, not long after Chester took over for Davis, he ended up getting ejected from the game for targeting. LSU tried a 59-yard field goal, the kick was short, which Southeastern returned, and Chester lowered his head making the tackle. Chester will be ineligible for the first half of next week’s game against Ole Miss (2:30 P.M., ABC) so the right tackle position could be a major question mark for LSU.
There’s really not a lot to say about tonight. LSU did what they were supposed to do, and now they’ve got six straight conference games coming up. Time to get ready for Ole Miss.
