Year one was quite disappointing for Jaydon Blue. After reports surfaced during training camp that Blue has some maturity and professionalism concerns, later comments from head coach Brian Schottenheimer seemed to confirm some of those reports.
Heading into year two, the RB2 job is up for the taking and Blue will be in a heavyweight fight for the job with Malik Davis, who impressed in limited work in 2025, and Phil Mafah, who the Cowboys seem to be very high on, also heading into year two.
In his rookie
campaign, Blue put up 129 rushing yards, one touchdown, and one fumble in five games played. He did most of his damage in Week 18 when he rushed for 64 yards and a touchdown against the New York Giants. Blue saw action in four consecutive weeks in weeks five through eight, but a fumble in Dallas’ 44-24 loss to the Denver Broncos seemingly put him back in the doghouse until Week 18.
Blue came out of Texas known for his big-play and pass catching ability. While there were certainly signs of that during training camp, in preseason, and in Week 18, the amount of game breaking plays we saw from Blue in the regular season were few and far between.
Schottenheimer has spoken highly of Blue’s growth heading into year two.
Training camp will be a massive box for Blue to check. With a need for a true RB2 and the comments earlier in the offseason from Schottenheimer, the job is there for the taking. Blue will need to prove himself this offseason, cleaning up some of the fumbling issues, pass protection, and maturity issues that kept him off the field for most of his rookie season.
With earlier reports sounding like Blue has taken a step in the right direction, training camp may be the only thing left in the way for Blue to win the job.
