Jaylon Thompson writes that the Royals still feel good about their road trip.
“Good road trip,” Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino told reporters in Cleveland. “Feel good about it. Obviously, not happy with the game. It’s not good enough today, but just got to take the off day tomorrow and get ready to get back at Miami on Tuesday.”
Henry Palattella writes that the role players are coming through.
While none of Rojas, Gose or Kimbrel were on the Royals’ roster in April, they helped pave the way
to a winning August.
“In February and March we talked about how we needed depth; you just don’t know why or when or where those guys are going to come from,” Quatraro said. “[Those players coming up] is a credit to our player development and the players themselves for putting themselves in a spot to come up.”
Josh Rojas enjoyed a four RBI day on Saturday.
Rojas’ electric day at the plate marked his second career four-RBI day, with the first coming on May 20, 2022, when he was a member of the Diamondbacks.
“Clearly he wasn’t trying to check-swing one down the line, but we’ll take it,” manager Matt Quatraro said. “You need some luck every now and then.”
Connor Bryne at MLB Trade Rumors writes that John Schreiber was placed on waivers.
Schreiber is running a 45.4% ground-ball rate, one of the highest of his career, though his strikeout (18%) and walk (11%) numbers have gone in the wrong direction. Fielding-independent metrics such as xFIP (4.52), SIERA (4.56), xERA (4.56) and FIP (4.87) are all similarly low on Schreiber, who has benefited from a .254 batting average on balls in play. Those red flags help explain why the Royals did not find a taker for Schreiber ahead of the Aug. 3 deadline. Perhaps that will change now that an acquiring team would not have to trade any compensation for him. If it does, Schreiber would join a new club by Sept. 1, which would make him eligible to participate in the playoffs.
