Editor’s note: With several sports going on, Wildcat Wrap serves as a recap that focuses on the Arizona programs that we do not have the time to cover on a regular basis but are certainly worthy of recognition.
Arizona cross country competed at the Big 12 Championships Friday in Lawrence, Ks., where the men’s team placed eighth and the women’s team finished 14th.
Evans Tanui led the Wildcats in the men’s 8K with a time of 23:48.0 to place 28th overall. Lawi Ngetich ran a time of 24:29.3 to finish 41st, Michael Urbanski ran 24:39.5 to finish 44th and Bryson Nielsen ran 24:43.0 to give Arizona four finishers in the top 50.
Arizona’s eighth place finish was a slight improvement when last season, when the Wildcats men finished 9th.
The women were led by Praise Chepkomoi in the 6K, who finished with a time of 21:37.2 to finish 63 overall.
Arizona’s 14th place finish was two spots better than last year, when the UA finished last .
Swimming and diving
Arizona swimming and diving traveled to Texas this week, where the Wildcats defeated TCU and SMU in a tri-meet.
The Arizona men beat TCU 24-112 and beat SMU 210-143, and the Arizona women beat TCU 235-117 and beat SMU 214-135.
Arizona earned 23 first-place finishes in the pool, including wins by both the men’s and women’s 400y medley relay teams. Alexandre Desangles was one of Arizona’s top performers, winning two events – the 100y back and the 200y back. He was also part of the medley relay.
Arizona is back in action next Friday when it hosts USC.
