On her latest Making Monsters podcast, Taylor Doll is joined by former Chicago Bears cornerback Jerry Azumah to talk about the newest Chicago Bears player, Jeffery Simmons, and the immediate impact he’ll have on this defense. They also dive into the Bears v. Seattle Seahawks game and what it will take for the Bears to upset the defending champion on the road.
Taylor is then joined by Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times, who shares the Seahawks’ perspective after they made a big trade for Quenton Nelson
to try to spark their run game and protect Sam Darnold. Taylor and Bob chat about all things Seattle, plus this possible chess match between Ben Johnson and Mike Macdonald, and how Macdonald’s defense will attack the Bears.
“They don’t blitz a ton. You know, traditionally, they’re not the biggest blitzing team ever. What they do more is try to bring pressure from different spots than you’ll see,” Condotta said. “So, it’s not always necessarily bringing like six guys, but it’s bringing four or five guys, but not from spots you necessarily thought those guys were coming from.”
Condotta then discussed Seattle’s biggest X factor.
“And that’s where Nick Emmanwori has become such a factor because he’s basically, essentially a strong side linebacker, but people make a big deal out of the Seahawks always playing nickel because they look at Emmanwori being listed as a safety, but you know, essentially a strong side linebacker. But you know, they can put him on the defensive line, and he’s just like a rush end.”
”It makes it kind of hard to know what they’re doing with him on this play, where what is he going to do, and you know you can rush him and drop someone else, and that’s where I think McDonald is really at his most dangerous is devising things like that.“
Besides previewing the game, Azumah also got into the big Simmons trade, and what else he’d like to see the Bears do.
“I would like to see a defensive back, particularly a corner, to go over to the Chicago Bears,” he said about another possible trade. “I think that they could use the depth. There’ve been some issues in the secondary, but you know, Dennis Allen, he runs a very precise system, and the DBs have to basically match up to the wide receivers, and sometimes they lose. So I think that with Simmons being there, I think that that’s going to help out the secondary tremendously, but I wouldn’t mind seeing a depth move at corner.”
