f you were looking for evidence that Bayern Munich controlled Saturday’s match against Mainz, the statistics make a pretty convincing case.
And just to clarify the graphic — Bayern Munich’s numbers are in white on the right, while Mainz’s numbers are in red on the left.
Bayern finished with 69% possession compared to Mainz’s 31%, outshot the hosts 26-11, and registered nine shots on target to Mainz’s solitary effort. The expected goals difference was equally striking:
2.67 for Bayern Munich against just 0.59 for Mainz.
The visitors also recorded 46 touches in the opposition box compared to 18 for Mainz, created five big chances, and completed 652 passes at 91% accuracy. Mainz managed just 232 accurate passes at 73%.
Perhaps the most telling statistic? Bayern Munich missed four big chances. Mainz missed none, largely because they barely had any opportunities to work with.
The two sides committed eight fouls apiece, but Bayern otherwise dominated virtually every meaningful attacking category.
A 2-1 victory is three points, and Bayern will certainly take it. But these numbers suggest the margin could, and probably should, have been considerably more comfortable.
