The Buffalo Bills received bad news regarding defensive tackle Ed Oliver’s injury. Oliver is expected to miss significant time, with head coach Sean McDermott stating the torn biceps will require surgery.
As of publishing, Oliver has not been placed on Injured Reserve, but McDermott said that he will be “out indefinitely” per Bills reporter Sal Capaccio.
This is Oliver’s second injury in seven games, a situation that’s limited him to just two and a half games played thus far in 2025. Oliver made a game-changing play to force a fumble by Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry in Week 1. The turnover came late in the fourth quarter, and sparked Buffalo’s come-from-behind win against a then-potent unkindness of Ravens.
During practice in Week 2, Oliver was injured when his foot was stepped on by a teammate. That injury sidelined him multiple games.
Oliver was playing lights-out in Week 8 prior to the biceps tear, notching three tackles and a sack before leaving the field and being ruled out almost immediately. Overall, Oliver has three sacks in just two and a half games played. Hopefully Oliver can return later this season to help during a postseason run, but chances are he lands on Injured Reserve while recovering from the injury and surgical repair.
Buffalo’s defense is significantly better with Oliver in the lineup, but now One Bills Drive must find new answers to solve the problem of an injury-riddled interior defensive line. If DaQuan Jones and second-round pick T.J. Sanders get healthy that will provide help to the position from within the roster.
There’s still time for general manager Brandon Beane to look outside the organization, either by way of the free-agent pool or even a potential trade partner. Regardless of who or how, Beane and company need to find someone capable of making an impact for the Bills in 2025. As a reminder, One Bills Drive doesn’t have a lot of money available to absorb contracts for players from other teams.
