After a few seasons of middling form at best, Bayern Munich’s Serge Gnabry is experiencing somewhat of a remontada as an attacking midfielder in Jamal Musiala’s absence. The 30-year-old has racked up an impressive
three goals and five assists in ten competitive games in the 2025/26 season and is showing no signs of slowing down.
Given Gnabry’s hot start to the season and a contract that runs out in less than a year, rumours of a potential contract extension have start swirling. However, the latest reports from Sky’s resident Bayern Munich expert, Florian Plettenberg, suggest that Die Rekordmeister would only be willing to offer Gnabry a contract extension with a pay cut (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Bayern can well imagine extending Serge Gnabry’s contract in principle. Max Eberl is a big fan of the German international. Gnabry is also open to staying at Bayern. He currently earns up to €18m gross per year including bonuses. For a contract extension to happen, there has to be a pay cut. Gnabry will certainly not be offered the same salary
The former Hoffenheim player is currently Bayern’s fourth highest earner alongside fellow countryman Jamal Musiala. It is questionable if Gnabry would be willing to take a pay cut, especially if his hot run of form continues across the season. Even when Bayern wanted to offload Gnabry, he was happy to stay with the club. A sign of loyalty or an opportunity to live the Dire Straits hit single, Money for Nothing?
Either way, if Gnabry wants an extension, regardless of a pay cut, he will have to prove that he can be consistent through the course of the season.
Bayern Munich is starting to really hit the rough-and-tumble portion of its first half schedule and Der Klassiker is at the forefront of it all.
Sure, Bayern Munich passed its test against Eintracht Frankfurt before the last international break, but Bundesliga matches against Bayer Leverkusen and SC Freiburg, Champions League games vs. Club Brugge, Paris Saint-Germain, and Arsenal, plus a DFB-Pokal tilt vs. FC Köln all are on tap before the end of November.
In a nutshell, buckle up.
