The Miami Dolphins are on the hunt for a new general manager, and they’re about to get some help
Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Dolphins are hiring Hall-of-Fame QB and ESPN analyst Troy Aikman as a consultant
to assist in their general manager search process. The role will not be permanent, but Aikman is expected to play a key role in their search.
Aikman played 12 seasons in the NFL, all for the Dallas Cowboys. He was drafted first overall in the 1989 NFL draft, and won three Super Bowls and was named to six Pro Bowls over the course of his career. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006, and is currently serving as the color commentator on Monday Night Football alongside Joe Buck.
Though he has lived his whole life in and around football, this would be Aikman’s first front office job in the NFL. He is part-owner of the San Diego Padres in Major League Baseball, but does not influence team operations. It’s currently unclear what role Aikman will play with the Dolphins, but owner Stephen Ross is seemingly pulling out all the stops. One would assume that Aikman will help create a shortlist of candidates for Ross to consider, given his connections and status around the league.
Certainly, the Dolphins will interview many candidates this offseason, and although league executives consider the job to be a prestigious one, it’s been more than a decade since the Dolphins last hired a general manager from outside the organization. There are no concrete names yet, but popular candidates from around the league include Alec Halaby of the Philadelphia Eagles, and John McKay of the Los Angeles Rams. I
