The Friday night lights shined on Lubbock, TX, which spent a night as the capital of the college football world for a high-stakes Big 12 clash.
No. 13 Texas Tech entered as the conference’s standard-bearer. The defending champions cruised to their first Big 12 title last season, winning eight conference games by 22 points or more before routing BYU in Arlington. But No. 22 Houston countered as the up-and-coming disruptor, fresh off a 10-win season and carrying the longest active road winning streak
in the FBS.
When the two teams collided, the Red Raiders maintained the Big 12 hierarchy, defeating Houston for the eighth-consecutive meeting, 28-26.
Just by a couple inches.
With 49 seconds remaining in the contest, Houston tight end Patrick Overmyer secured a touchdown 10-yard reception, putting the Cougars on the brink of forcing overtime. On the ensuing two-point attempt, nobody was open, so quarterback Conner Weigman called his own number, took off, and was ready to cement a highlight in Houston lore. He met three defenders simultaneously, lunged forward, and slammed the ball on the goal line.
Brief celebrations erupted on both sidelines, as Texas Tech believed it generated the game-winning stop, while Houston believed Weigman stretched the ball across the goal line. The referees ruled in favor of the Red Raiders, and the replay center stated there was no “clear and obvious” evidence to overturn the call. So it stood.
Texas Tech emerged victorious in one of the most pivotal Big 12 showdowns of the season, while Houston exited Lubbock wondering how close it came to an entirely different outcome.
While Texas Tech never won a game by fewer than three touchdowns last season, its first conference victory of 2026 featured no shortage of adversity. The Red Raiders found themselves in a 10-0 first quarter hole. Backup quarterback Thomas Castellanos, who joined the team Aug. 26, made a surprise start in place of Will Hammond. Castellanos’ first play was a throwaway, but instead of firing the ball out of balls, he threw it to Houston cornerback Will James on a toe-tapping interception.
The Cougars had all the early momentum. A methodical offense collected 117 yards on its first two drives, finishing with a field goal and an impressive touchdown grab by All-Big 12 wide receiver Amare Thomas. However, the momentum halted when However, Houston had a chance to take a three-score lead but suffered its lone three-and-out of the night, punting on 4th-and-2 from midfield. Then the momentum firmly swung three plays later.
Hammond — who played the remainder of the game at quarterback — escaped a 3rd-and-12 blitz and delivered a successful strike to Kenny Johnson on the sideline. The Pitt transfer receiver then corralled a 35-yard touchdown to cap the drive and continued feasting on the Houston secondary all night. Johnson caught four passes for 113 yards, with all four receptions spanning at last 23 yards. Texas Tech struggled to generate explosive plays in its first two games, but Johnson’s downfield dominance helped the Red Raiders regain their mojo.
Texas Tech quickly flipped a 10-0 deficit into a 14-10 lead, and that’s when the highlight show started at Galaxy Stadium. Two Cougars wearing No. 2 jerseys made spectacular one-handed grabs to provide the road team a 17-14 halftime advantage. First, it was Koby Young using his right arm to firmly secure a perfectly placed 46-yard moonball from Weigman. Then cornerback Jalen Mayo stalled a Texas Tech drive at the end of the half by snatching a Hammond deep shot with his right arm.
In the second half, the Red Raiders ran rampant, while Houston’s offense relied more heavily on the passing game. Texas Tech produced 118 of its 168 rushing yards in the final 30 minutes of action, as J’Koby Williams and Cameron Dickey both punched in touchdowns to give the Red Raiders a 28-20 lead.
In between the Williams and Dickey scores, Texas Tech made the most consequential defensive stop of the game. On 3rd-and-1 from the Texas Tech 4-yard line, Houston lined up in a tight formation and handed the ball to Makhi Hughes. However, Texas Tech outside linebacker John Curry shed a block and stuffed Hughes for a loss, forcing the Cougars to a chip shot field goal — effectively shaving four points off the scoreboard in game decided by two.
Houston’s offense was held out of the end zone for the first 29 minutes of the second half before Weigman strung together a 10-play, 88-yard two-minute drive. While Weigman’s late response ended in a touchdown, the Cougars fell inches short of the tie in heartbreaking fashion.
Houston (2-1, 0-1 Big 12) saw its six-game road winning streak snapped and remains without a victory in Lubbock since 1990. The Cougars proved their mettle as Big 12 contenders by going toe-to-toe on the road against the defending champion. However, a close fight counts the same in the Big 12 standings as any defeat, and Houston will marinate in an 0-1 conference record for another week while concluding its non-conference slate at Georgia Southern.
Texas Tech (3-0, 1-0 Big 12) collected its 10th consecutive home win and seventh straight over Big 12 competition, including last December’s triumph in the conference title game. While the Red Raiders haven’t replicated their 2025 dominance, they stepped up against one of their greatest challengers — and the only currently ranked team remaining on their schedule.
