The nominees for the 2026 Ballon d’Or have been released and Mexican Women’s Football has made history. Club América Femenil and Scarlett Camberos are on the shortlist for a Ballon d’Or award after a historical year and with these nominations they have put Mexican Women’s Football on the international map.
Club América Femenil has had a successful 2026 and the world is recognizing them for their success. In just a span of a few months América won the 2026 Clausura, Campeón de Campeones and Concacaf
Women’s Champions Cup. By winning the Champions Cup they have become the first Mexican Women’s club to win a continental trophy. These three trophies didn’t happen by chance, they are the collective efforts of the players, the coaching staff and most importantly the front office. The front office meant it when they said they were going to put everything they had into the women’s team and their efforts have paid off. It wasn’t just about the money but also about giving them their full attention. This was proven by how aggressively they attacked the market. While other teams would drag their feet on signings, América made big efforts to sign both domestic and foreign players that could bolster their lines. It wasn’t just about the attack but making sure their defense and midfield was also solidified. It was about giving their head coach Angel Villacampa all the tools he needed to succeed and it all paid off.
Scarlett Camberos has had the privilege of leading América Femenil into the history books. She was named captain upon her return to Mexico after some time in the NWSL and she has never looked back. During her time abroad with Angel City FC and Bay FC, Camberos was only able to score two goals over the span of 30 appearances. The Mexican international may have struggled to adapt to those two teams but she quickly recovered her form when she returned to Mexico. It was as if she never left. Just this last year during the 2025/2026 season Camberos scored more than 22 goals for América proving that she doesn’t have issues scoring, she just needed to be in the right system. A system that allows her to roam free up the wing where she is most dangerous. It’s from the flank where she’s also able to assist her teammates as she recorded 14 assists this last season. Camberos is a player that bleeds azulcrema and after many heartbreaks she has now captained América to international history.
