How Acquired
Jose Perdomo was the prize signing of the Braves 2024 International Free Agent signing period. He was signed for nearly the entire pool, coming in at a start $5m.
What Were Expectations?
Expectations were sky high for Jose Perdomo with a lot of people hoping he would find his way to full season ball. It also doesn’t help when you’re compared to Miguel Cabrera all throughout the international period – so with that kind of praise a lot of people expected a lot from Jose.
2025 Results After
struggling with a hamstring injury in 2024 that limited Jose to just 8 games, there was hope that a full offseason would have Jose ready to go in 2025, unfortunately the season started off poorly with some expecting Jose to be in better shape – not that he was in bad shape, but just better shape. It turned into a bit of a struggle of a season as he hit .223/.275/.270 in 54 games. The strikeout rate wasn’t bad, as it sat at 19.3%, but when your OBP is less than .300 despite a decent walk rate of 6%, a story of poor contact is written. Jose had a 54.3% GB%, and a line drive rate that dipped to 14%. Fact of the matter is that with someone with his pedigree, a 69 wRC+ season is bad. When you factor it was in complex ball, it’s even worse because he’s facing mainly fastballs at that level.
What Went Right?
Jose was able to appear in 54 games, showing health, after suffering with a nagging hamstring most of 2024. His strikeout rate was also solid, sitting at 19%.
What Went Wrong?
Unfortunately quite a bit else went wrong. Jose stayed in complex ball for the full season, which was a bit of a let down. Jose did not hit for much power – seen by his .270 slugging percentage, and had just four stolen bases.
2026 Outlook
2026 is going to be a critical year for Jose. He likely starts the season in complex ball as he did not show the success that necessarily merits a promotion to Low-A. He’s been considered one of the top international positional prospects in all of baseball and entering season three, it’s time to at least show flashes of the tools that earned him that massive signing bonus. While it’s not imperative Jose go off this season, as he’s still just 19 years old, it’s still important to see progress.
