The Colorado Rockies fell to their National League West rival San Francisco Giants in their penultimate game of the 2025 season. In a game where both teams were playing for pride alone, the pitching was solid and there were four total home runs. It looked like the Rockies might be able to walk away with an extra win to help close out their miserable season, but they fell just short.

Only one truly bad pitch marred Kyle Freeland’s 31st and final start of the 2025 season. After walking Matt Chapman
with a full count and giving up a single to Wilmer Flores, Freeland left a low velocity four seam fastball in the middle of the plate for Giants second baseman Casey Schmidt. The ball was predictably demolished to dead center for three runs.
However, Freeland locked in after the home run, setting down the next 12 Giants batters in a row. The Giants didn’t have another baserunner until Heliot Ramos singled in the bottom of the sixth inning. He would advance to second but Freeland would end up retiring the next three hitters in order.
Freeland’s final line of 2025 was three earned runs given up on three hits and a walk, with four strikeouts over six innings of work. He finishes the season with a 4.98 ERA, the first time he’s had a sub-5.00 ERA season since 2022.
Jimmy Herget worked a scoreless seventh inning, but in the eighth inning Victor Vodnik allowed a run after walking a batter. With two outs in the frame, Rafael Devers hit a fly ball to center field that Brenton Doyle was unable to corral on a diving attempt.
Noise early, noise late, quiet in-between.
The Rockies’ offense got off to a promising start when Hunter Goodman and Brenton Doyle took Giants starter and future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander deep in the first and second innings.
The Rockies had very little else to say over the next six innings, threatening a few times but failing to score. Goodman and Doyle were the only members of the Rockies lineup with multiple hits. On the bright side, the team struck out just eight times.
When Jordan Beck hit a home run to lead off the ninth inning—ending an 0-for-17 streak with ten strikeouts—it looked like the Rockies might be in business with only a one run deficit. Brenton Doyle doubled and was moved to third base on a Yanquiel Fernández groundout. When Kyle Karros drew a walk and Ryan Ritter was hit by a pitch in his elbow-guard, the bases were loaded for Ezequiel Tovar with two outs.
Tovar fouled off four of the first five pitches he saw, and popped the sixth into foul territory. Unfortunately the Giants’ third baseman was able to catch the ball at the netting to end the game.
