The Missouri Tigers closed their 2025 season with a 13-7 loss Saturday night to Virginia at the Gator Bowl.
MU held a lead into the second half, but a last-ditch comeback attempt fell short as the team’s
offense struggled to generate momentum after finding early success.
Mizzou jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead with a touchdown on the game’s first drive as Jamal Roberts punched the ball into the end zone from five yards out. The score came two plays after Hardy burst through a gaggle of Cavalier defenders for a 43-yard gain.
The Tigers did not score again, putting up their second-lowest scoring total of the season. The seven points ranked just ahead of their output in a 17-6 loss to Oklahoma in Norman.
Plenty of special teams miscues, and few points, followed Roberts’ opening drive score.
Virginia kicker Will Bettridge left a 41-yard field goal attempt short and wide with less than four minutes until the half, missing an opportunity to cut the MU lead to one.
The Tigers punted on the ensuing drive, but Cam Ross muffed the recovery after an awkward bounce and Tavorous Jones came up with the ball to give Mizzou back possession five yards outside of the red zone.
MU came up empty, going three-and-out before Oliver Robbins missed a 42-yard field goal attempt wide right with just over a minute to go before the half.
The Tigers had 77 yards over their final five drives of the first half after the 74-yard touchdown drive to open the game, allowing the Cavaliers to slowly overtake them.
Mizzou’s defense thrived on early downs but struggled to force the UVA offense off the field on third and fourth downs. Virginia went 13-of-23 on third downs and 2-of-4 on fourth downs.
Cavaliers quarterback Chandler Morris frequently targeted Eli Wood on key downs with success, and the wide receiver ended the game with four receptions for 71 yards.
UVA took its first lead of the night on a 19 play, 75-yard drive coming out of halftime that lasted over 10 minutes. Virginia moved the chains five times on third and fourth downs during a drive that ended on a wildcat snap to Harrison Waylee for the two-yard score.
The Cavaliers added a field goal on their next drive after Matt Zollers’ pass was tipped into the air and then reeled in by Emmanuel Karnley for the interception, setting them up on the MU 35-yard line. Bettridge knocked home a 39-yarder after UVA’s drive stalled once it reached the red zone, putting the team ahead 13-7.
The six-point lead turned out to be enough for Virginia, as the Tigers converted just one first down before the two-minute timeout in the second half.
That came on Mizzou’s drive with less than five minutes remaining as the offense made its way into Cavaliers territory for a third-and-one. But a false start by Dominick Giudice moved MU back five yards before the play, and Zollers fell short of the marker on a fourth down scramble.
The first down also gave Ahmad Hardy the Tigers’ single-season rushing record, passing Cody Schrader’s mark of 1,627 rushing yards. Hardy ended the game with 89 rushing yards to bring his final season total to 1,649.
Despite Mizzou’s deep offensive struggles, it nearly came away with the win. Zollers led the Tigers down the field in the game’s last minute, and a 24-yard connection with Donovan Olugbode placed them just outside of the red zone.
That’s where they would stay, throwing four straight incompletions — including a fourth down pass to the end zone by Brett Brown, who entered after Zollers was hit following his toss on third down.
The turnover on downs brought Morris on for a kneel down with one second remaining, sealing the Virginia win.
MU ends it season with an 8-5 record after starting 6-1. Mizzou will enter next year with a new-look schedule after the addition of a ninth SEC game and a new starting quarterback after Beau Pribula’s expected transfer.
