Alberto Mendoza, Indiana football’s second string quarterback in 2025 through its run to the National Championship, has entered the transfer portal, according to reporting from ESPN.
Mendoza, the younger brother of starting quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, has been with the Hoosiers since before the 2024 season. He flipped his commitment to Indiana from James Madison after Curt Cignetti was hired as the Hoosiers’ head coach and was a factor in his brother’s decision to join
the program.
Indiana brought in another quarterback, TCU’s Josh Hoover, through the transfer portal during its postseason run. With Hoover likely lined up to start given his years of experience, the path for Mendoza to earn the starting role narrowed significantly.
Mendoza rose up Indiana’s depth chart in 2025, becoming his brother’s backup and taking late-game snaps throughout the season. Given his situation, he’ll likely be looking for a spot he could start, with 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz reporting that Georgia Tech is an early team to watch.
