It turns out Santa Clara was the only choice for Kentucky Basketball to play in the NCAA Tournament Round of 64.
Based on how the Selection Committee seeds teams, the Broncos were the only No. 10 seed Kentucky could play in the opening round this Friday. In essence, the Wildcats drew Santa Clara by default, as none of the other No. 10 seeds were able to be chosen.
Missouri is a No. 10 seed, but Kentucky couldn’t play them because that would be an All-SEC matchup. All-conference matchups can’t happen
in the Round of 64.
Texas A&M is another No. 10 seed, but they’re also in the SEC. That wouldn’t have worked either.
Then, there’s Central Florida. They’re in the Big 12, but because Iowa State is the No. 2 seed in Kentucky’s subregional, they couldn’t be the No. 10 seed there in the event there’s an All-Big 12 Round of 32 matchup.
That left Santa Clara from the West Coast Conference as Kentucky’s only possible opponent to open NCAA Tournament play.
