Let’s check in with the lucha libre action of CMLL. Mistico defended his world title, the finals for El Torneo Gran Alternativa were determined, Tessa Blanchard was victorious, and there is an injury replacement
for the upcoming Dream Match show.
In the Friday night main event (Dec. 12, 2025), Mistico defended the CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship against Soberano Jr. The challenger pinned Mistico last week in trios action (highlights), and that gave him the bravado to come for the gold. In the title match, Soberano had the audacity to execute La Mistica armbar on Mistico, however, Mistico rolled to escape. Soberano went to the piledriver maneuver that won the trios match, but it wasn’t enough this time. Mistico rallied for La Mistica on Soberano to earn the submission victory.
Soberano didn’t win the championship, but he can find solace in the consolation prize of being a ladies man. Soberano hammed it up on Saturday night with kisses from the fans in a GIF courtesy of Luchablog.
Soberano made another fan lose her mind with excitement.
CMLL also held the El Torneo Gran Alternativa quarterfinals and semifinals on Friday night. The concept is pairing one star veteran with one youngster for a tag team tournament. 8 teams enter, and 2 teams move on to the final on December 19. For one half of the semifinals, Atlantis Jr. & Xelhua advanced past Euforia & Gallero via frog splash and bridging northern lights suplex for the pinfalls. On the other side of the bracket, Angel de Oro & Yutani defeated Esfinge & Futuro via back-to-belly piledriver and a super Styles Clash for the pinfalls.
Tessa Blanchard was victorious over Zeuxis in a lightning match. Blanchard surged in the end for a flying Codebreaker and a sitdown powerbomb.
In injury news, Neon has been pulled from the Dream Match card on December 19. Neon was scheduled to wrestle Kevin Knight of AEW. Soberano Jr. is taking Neon’s spot. That show also includes Claudio Castagnoli defending the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship against Ultimo Guerrero and “Speedball” Mike Bailey challenging Mascara Dorada for the World Historic Welterweight Championship.
