After 14 seasons of cementing herself as La Reina (The Queen) not only of Barcelona but of women’s soccer, Alexia Putellas is calling it on her time in Catalonia.
There was a lot of speculation and talk about where Putellas’ future was going to be, with London City Lionesses being in the mix among the many offers she had. Although not official, it has been reported that Michele Kang’s team is leading the pack even though Barcelona’s captain is still considering her options, with the NWSL among those,
according to reports.
On early Tuesday morning, many journalists reported on Twitter that the attacking midfielder would be announcing her departure that day, and they were right. She did so with a very emotional video posted on her own Instagram account.
“I was six years old the first time I went to Camp Nou with my father. I could never have imagined that one day, more than 90,000 culés would be there chanting my name,” said Alexia in her farewell video.
Right after the video was posted, her teammates supported her with messages. “Barça’s legend,” said Aitana Bonmatí when sharing the midfielder’s video on her status. “An authentic legend. I’m going to miss you so much!” shared Caroline Graham Hansen regarding the video as well. “The story wouldn’t have been the same without you. So proud!” commented Patri Guijarro. “We are the lucky ones for having shared a part of your history. Thank you so much,” commented Kika Nazareth.
Her teammates’ comments speak volumes for what she has become not only for the club, she’s the very embodiment of Barcelona, but for women’s soccer. It’s no wonder she has so many options ahead of her and that her decision will keep the entire women’s soccer world in waiting until she announces where her destination is.
