Philadelphia was moving the ball, the game was still within reach, and the Cowboys needed someone to shut the door. DeMarvion Overshown answered.
His fourth-quarter interception of Tanner McKee thwarted a promising Eagles drive and secured a 10-point lead. In a game Dallas ultimately won 38-21, this takeaway propelled the Cowboys firmly into the driver’s seat, leaving Philadelphia to chase both the scoreboard and the clock.
The final score makes this look more comfortable than it felt heading into
the fourth quarter. Philadelphia had opened the second half with a 17-play touchdown drive that consumed over nine minutes and gave them a 21-20 lead. However, Dallas responded with CeeDee Lamb’s second touchdown, followed by Dak Prescott’s two-point conversion, which moved the Cowboys ahead 28-21.
Brandon Aubrey extended the lead to 31-21 with a 24-yard field goal. While the Eagles had given Dallas some breathing room, their next possession quickly threatened to reverse the momentum. McKee connected with Dallas Goedert for 18 yards, propelling the Eagles to the Cowboys’ 32-yard line. A touchdown would have narrowed the gap to just three points with time left in the fourth quarter.
With 7:55 remaining on first-and-10, McKee looked towards Goedert on an out route to the right. Overshown intercepted the throw and returned it to the Dallas 34. Philadelphia had moved into scoring territory, only to leave without a point. The Cowboys capitalised on this, taking the ball back at the precise moment the Eagles needed an answer to keep their two-possession cushion.
The importance of that play went beyond the turnover itself. Philadelphia could no longer build patiently toward a score and trust there would be enough time for another possession. Every empty drive now carried greater consequences. Dallas could lean on its running game, make the Eagles use more time and force McKee to bring them back through the air.
The Cowboys did punt on the possession after the interception, but Philadelphia’s opportunity had become considerably harder. Starting from their own 16, the Eagles were pushed backward by an eight-yard Quinnen Williams sack. They eventually faced fourth-and-nine and failed to convert. Overshown’s takeaway had preserved the lead, the next defensive stand gave Dallas the chance to finish the job, which they did.
Overshown’s significant contribution in his first appearance since Week 1, following a hamstring injury, served as a reminder of his enormous talent when healthy. He played on 65% of the snaps on Monday, eating into rookie Jaishawn Barham’s snaps. He finished tied for the lead in tackles with six. He was also credited with a tackle for loss and two passes defensed. Plus, the all-important interception.
Overshown staying healthy could be a turning point for the defense.
