TCU football is moving closer to its 2026 season opener against North Carolina in Dublin, Ireland on Aug. 29. As the Countdown to Kickoff continues, we’ll highlight a former Horned Frog whose jersey number coincided with the number of days remaining until the opener. At No. 2 is former TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin!
A starter throughout his four-year college career, Boykin played in 48 games and ended his career as one of the best quarterbacks in program history. The dual-threat star threw for 10,728
yards and 86 touchdowns while rushing for 2,049 yards and 27 touchdowns for the Horned Frogs. Boykin filled in as the starter in 2012, when Casey Pachall was suspended from and ultimately left the program before returning in 2013. Boykin led TCU to the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl before sharing time with Pachall during his sophomore season in 2013.
Boykin made an enormous leap his junior season, throwing for a career-high 3,901 yards and 33 touchdowns with a career-high 707 rushing yards and eight scores. He earned Second-Team All-American consideration, earned the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting and was a finalist for the Davey O’Brien Award, Walter Camp Player of the Year Award and Manning Award. He was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, MVP of the Peach Bowl win against Ole Miss and TCU’s Dan Rogers Team MVP. The Horned Frogs finished 12-1 on the season and shared the Big 12 title with Baylor. It was TCU’s first Big 12 title.
As a senior, Boykin threw for 3,575 yards and 31 touchdowns with 612 rushing yards and 10 scores. He became one of just eight FBS quarterbacks at the time to eclipse 10,000 passing yards and 1,500 rushing yards for his career. Boykin again receiving All-American consideration and was a finalist for multiple awards. TCU went 11-2 and defeated Oregon in the Alamo Bowl, a game Boykin did not participate in due to an arrest following a bar fight two days before the game. He signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2016.
Once the backup to quarterback Russell Wilson, Boykin played in five NFL games and threw one touchdown pass his short NFL career. The Seahawks released him in 2018 after being arrested on domestic violence charges. He pled guilty to the charges and was sentenced to three years in prison. After his release, Boykin resumed his career in the Mexican League, playing for the Galgos de Tijuana of the Liga de Futbol Americano Profesional (LFA) in 2023. He led the league in passing touchdowns. In 2025, Boykin signed with the Dinos de Saltillo.
