The San Antonio Spurs have taken the basketball world by storm. Over the course of the first week, the Spurs have gone from an intriguing young team to appointment viewing. San Antonio is 4-0 for the first time
since the 2017-2018 season, and is slated to get back their All-Star guard, De’Aaron Fox, in the next few games.
Victor Wembanyama has led the way for San Antonio, averaging 31 points, 13.8 rebounds, and 4.8 blocks while shooting 60% from the field. He’s firmly gotten himself into the MVP conversation, but he hasn’t won all of these games by himself. He’s gotten plenty of help from his supporting cast. Including some surprising developments across the roster.
Keldon Johnson is impacting winning like never before. He’s been a spark plug off the bench, grabbing 3 offensive rebounds and scoring 12 points per game. His energy has been much needed in the absence of other interior players like Jeremy Sochan, Bismack Biyombo, and Luke Kornet.
The former Celtics’ big man, Kornet, has missed the last two games with a sprained ankle, but has shone in the games he does play. He’s no Wembanyama (no one is), but he keeps the Spurs’ interior defense respectable while Wemby sits, and complements the superstar when they play together.
At guard, Dylan Harper and Devin Vassell have been great. Vassell is playing some of the best basketball of his career, and Harper looks like a key rotation player already. Vassell has looked so good, it’s going to be hard to move him to the bench when Fox returns from injury. Someone is going to have to exit the starting lineup to let the point guard back in. Will it be Stephon Castle, Julian Champagnie, Harrison Barnes, or Vassell? Which Spur has been the most pleasant surprise overall to start the season?
