Yesterday, the National Baseball Hall of Fame announced the eight former players who would appear on the newest Contemporary Baseball Era Committee ballot. A successor to the old Veterans Committee, these former stars from 1980 onward made it past the screening and will be discussed by 16 committee members at the Winter Meetings in December. If any of the players receive at least 12 votes—75 percent, just like on the BBWAA ballot—then they will be enshrined in Cooperstown next July, alongside any BBWAA inductees. Dick Allen and Dave Parker were the two most recent Hall of Famers to be inducted via an Eras Committee.
As Jeff Middleton wrote the other day, former Yankees Don Mattingly, Roger Clemens, and Gary Sheffield are on the current ballot alongside Barry Bonds, Jeff Kent, Dale Murphy, Carlos Delgado, and the late Fernando Valenzuela. So who would get your vote(s) if you had a say?
The committee is limited to a maximum of three votes on this eight-man ballot, so we’re abiding by those rules as well to get a read on how you would allocate ‘em. All permutations of former Yankees are included, with “none” also being an option. To keep the poll simple, we’re leaving out the other players but it is of course your discretion if you would hypothetically be budgeting for them as well. We just want to know if any of the Yankees alumni would get your vote.
