Roy Keane has never been one to mince words — and on the latest episode of Stick to Football, the former Manchester United captain called out Liverpool fans for booing Trent Alexander-Arnold during his
return to Anfield as a Real Madrid player.
Alexander-Arnold, who left Liverpool in the summer join Real Madrid, was met with a chorus of boos from sections of the home crowd before and during the Champions League clash. The reaction surprised some, including Keane, who felt the behavior betrayed the values Liverpool supporters often pride themselves on.
“Liverpool fans have a reputation for loyalty and are a level above most supporters,” Keane said. “But what happened last night was a disappointment. For a guy who gave his all for nine seasons, who won the Premier League and the Champions League, to be booed just because he decided not to renew his contract is unfair.”
Keane emphasized that Alexander-Arnold’s decision to leave Merseyside was professional, not personal — and that the reaction was completely unwarranted.
“I’m not saying they have to applaud him for leaving,” Keane continued. “But to go to the trouble of booing a player with over 260 appearances for the club seems ridiculous to me. He’s a Liverpool lad, a product of their academy, who always played with pride. The fans should take a good look at themselves before boasting about having class.”
Keane also pointed out that Alexander-Arnold handled his departure in the right way — without controversy or public drama.
“Trent didn’t make a scene. He didn’t speak out of turn, he didn’t create a fuss. He simply made a professional decision. And that has to be respected.
“If you boo one of your own, especially a player who gave you everything, that says more about you than it does about him.”
