Borussia Mönchengladbach knew it had a tough task in facing off with Bayern Munich, but an early red card complicated things further.
The Bavarians would ultimately walk away with a 3-0 victory and Gladbach
could only pick up the pieces afterward.
“No coach is satisfied after losing. We know how good Bayern are. Our goal was to prevent Bayern from looking good, so I’m proud of our performance today,” said Gladbach head coach Eugen Polanski.
Kevin Stöger, who hit the post on a penalty kick attempt that was Gladbach’s best scoring opportunity,
“We showed what we can do when we don’t have the ball, in the first half in particular. We all know how hard it is against FC Bayern, even with 11 men. We were reduced to ten early on. We can really praise ourselves for the first half, but we perhaps lacked the energy in the second half. Bayern did a good job then, which makes it extremely bitter,” said Stöger.
Finally, Gladbach’s Philipp Sander credited his squad for battling through the red card.
“If you see a red card, it’s much harder against a team that’s incredibly strong anyway. I think we did a good job for a relatively long time. We can see our performance in perspective. We can certainly take a few positive things away. But at the end of the day, we failed to take points, and that’s what counts,” said Sander.
Bayern Munich traveled to Borussia Mönchengladbach for a Bundesliga tilt featuring the league first-place and last-place teams.
The game went as expected — especially after Gladbach picked up an early red card, which completely shifted the momentum into Bayern Munich’s favor.
It was a daunting task to ask Gladbach to hold strong for over 70 minutes and eventually Die Fohlen just broke down. Ultimately, Bayern Munich walked away with a 3-0 victory over Gladbach.
