The Dallas Cowboys struck a deal on Saturday evening. They agreed to send third- and sixth-round picks in 2027 to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for offensive tackle Broderick Jones and a fourth-rounder in the same draft. Interestingly the sixth headed to Pittsburgh originally belonged to them and only found Dallas’ hands by way of the George Pickens trade.
But we are here to talk about Broderick Jones and how he is now a member of the Cowboys. If you have had a conversation with another Cowboys fan
since the trade then you know that most people aren’t exactly pumped about the compensation. Consider that so far BTBers have graded the move as a C for the hometown squad.
It goes without saying that we all hope Jones finds his way with the Cowboys. Klayton Adams has seemingly offered his seal of approval and that is worth a lot.
In thinking more about this move though, there is one element that stands out as important and worth celebrating.
This is a sign of proactivity from the Cowboys
Many Cowboys fans had the following thoughts when reading about the trade.
What about Nate Thomas? Is he not a future option at tackle in a Terence Steele-less world? Or, I don’t konw, is Drew Shelton an option? You know, the guy they just spent a fourth-round pick on? Are they seriously punting on a fourth-round pick this early?
Shelton has not had a good preseason so perhaps you read that last question and answer it with passion despite its rhetorical nature. But you certainly understand that the Cowboys have been patient in the past because of investments they have made and Shelton qualifies as one of those given that he is a fourth-round pick and has yet to even reach his first Week 1.
So, as we think about this, isn’t the fact that the Cowboys are already moving on (figuratively, obviously not literally) not impressive? Don’t get me wrong, there is something to say about missing on Shelton, but Cowboys teams of the past would have kept on because of his draft status and then simply hoped that all worked out.
Sunk cost fallacy has plagued this team in some respects and this is an example of them moving on from it as a common disposition. It is better to keep moving and specifically to do so in a forward direction. This is that, even if it comes at a steeper price than any of us would have liked.
