The goal for any team is to come out with a strong start. The New Orleans Saints will have to do exactly that if they want to get out of the blocks fast. They’re facing an uphill battle right out of the gate, traveling to Detroit to face a Lions team looking to bounce back from a season that fell short of expectations.
These are not the Lions of old as they have a formidable offense and a really stout defense. This will be an immediate test for Brandon Staley to show improvement in the interior run
defense with young defensive tackles like Christen Miller and company. They’ll be going up against an offensive line anchored by stalwart tackle Penei Sewell and a dynamic, do-it-all running back in Jahmyr Gibbs. Let’s also not forget veteran quarterback Jared Goff, who brings plenty of big-game experience.
If you thought it would get any easier after Week 1, think again. The Saints then travel to Baltimore to face two-time MVP Lamar Jackson, now under a new head coach in Jesse Minter. Minter is a defensive specialist who served as the Chargers’ defensive coordinator last year. His offensive staff will be led by offensive coordinator Declan Doyle, who held the same role last season under Ben Johnson in Chicago. While Johnson was the primary play-caller, his influence and mentorship of Doyle should serve him well in Baltimore, especially with one of the most talented quarterbacks in league history.
The first two weeks are very challenging, but after that, the schedule becomes much more manageable. It’s important for the Saints to split those first two games to put themselves in the best position to stack wins heading into Paris and then into their bye week.
We’ll continue to dive deeper into the schedule over the next few days. How do you feel about the first few games, and where do you think the Saints can find the most wins? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
