WWE promised a big tag team title match at SmackDown featuring Oba Femi and Bron Breakker. While the company delivered on that promise, fans ultimately got a whole lot of nothing.
On Wednesday, WWE announced that Femi and Cody Rhodes would challenge Breakker and Austin Theory for Raw’s World Tag Team titles. The match took place Friday at Boston’s TD Garden after the show went off the air.
But instead of a battle between monsters, fans mostly got a one-on-one bout between Rhodes and Theory, with a sprinkle
of interference from Maxxine Dupri.
Footage from vlogger Matt Kempke showed Breakker and Femi finally going at it near the end of the match. After a brief brawl, they tumbled to the floor when Femi clotheslined Breakker over the ropes.
Back in the ring, Dupri hit Rhodes with a low blow, causing a disqualification.
After the match, the tag champs ganged up on Rhodes. Femi stopped Breakker from hitting a spear before targeting Theory. Rhodes then hit Theory with a Cross Rhodes. Femi followed that up with a Fall From Grace, sending The Vision packing.
WWE has been teasing a match between Femi and Breakker since the Raw after SummerSlam. While a title change in a dark match seemed unlikely, an exciting sneak peek at WWE’s answer to King Kong vs. Godzilla seemed possible.
Instead, fans got the lamest part of a would-be trailer.
Looks like the WWE Universe is just gonna have to wait a little longer to see the whole thing — whenever it happens.
