HAMILTON, Ontario — On Oct. 9, versus the Edmonton Elks, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and their Alumni Association (HTCAA) will formally induct running back Troy Davis into the Wall of Honour at Hamilton Stadium. Davis, whose name will be permanently displayed on the stadium’s west façade, is being celebrated for a career that spanned from 2001 to 2005.
“Troy Davis left a lasting mark on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats record book and on an entire generation of fans,” Scott Mitchell, CEO and Managing Partner of Hamilton Sports
Group said in a press release. “His accomplishments on the field, highlighted by one of the greatest rushing seasons in franchise history, make him incredibly deserving of this honour and permanent recognition on the Wall of Honour.”
Long before he became a hero in Hamilton, Davis established his reputation as a powerhouse at Iowa State, where he famously became the first player in NCAA history to record back-to-back 2,000-yard rushing seasons.
This same dominance carried over to the CFL, where he became Hamilton’s all-time leader in rushing attempts (1,053), rushing yards (5,296), and 100-yard rushing games (18). Between 2002 and 2005, he led the team in rushing for four straight seasons and surpassed the 1,000-yard mark three times. His 2004 campaign remains the greatest rushing season in franchise history, as he led the league in attempts, yards (1,628), and touchdowns (10).
Davis’s accolades include being a three-time East All-CFL selection (2002-2004) and a CFLPA All-Star in 2004. He was also twice named the team’s nominee for the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player award. One of his most iconic moments occurred during the 2004 Labour Day Classic, when he set a single-game franchise record by rushing for 233 yards against Toronto.
“Few players in franchise history carried the offence the way Troy Davis did,” HTCAA President Sandy Beveridge said in a press release. “Week after week, he delivered with unbelievable toughness and consistency. He was a great teammate and the greatest running backs our organization has ever seen.”
Davis will be the 31st inductee to receive this prestigious recognition, which is determined by a committee of club, media and fan representatives.
