Less than 24 hours after word of their interest in the player first broke with news that Liverpool were willing to pay a fee equal to his €40M release clause, the Reds have completed the signing of 22-year-old Osasuna breakout winger and Spanish international Victor Muñoz.
Muñoz had seemed a near lock to join Newcastle in recent weeks, and on Tuesday the Magpies believed the deal was done and he was theirs only for word of late Liverpool interest—believed to be driven by new head coach Andoni Iraola—saw
the player put pause on that move.
Liverpool then moved at pace, agreeing to a transfer fee equal to the player’s €40M release clause but paid in two instalments, hammering out a six-year contract with the player, and sending a team to Spain’s World Cup camp to oversee a medical and put on the finishing touches.
Now, officially, Muñoz is a Red. He becomes the first signing of what is expected to be a busy summer transfer window with the club fully expected to continue to push for another significant wing signing and RB Leipzig’s rising star Ivorian Yan Diomande the top target.
Last season was Muñoz’ first as a regular at the senior level after joining Osasuna from Real Madrid in a €5M deal. Madrid will receive 50% of his sale fee. Muñoz proved himself as one of the fastest players in La Liga last season and had seven goals and five assists in 36 games.
