The Jacksonville Jaguars have agreed to a trade with the Cleveland Browns to swap cornerbacks.
Pending physicals, the Jaguars will receive Greg Newsome and a 2026 sixth-rounder, and the Browns will receive Tyson
Campbell and a 2026 seventh-rounder.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter originally reported the news on Wednesday night. The deal was officially announced on Thursday morning.
“We are trying to win football games now and Greg helps us do that, as his skillset is a strong fit for our defensive scheme, which puts more vision on the quarterback and will lean on Greg’s ability to find the football,” Jaguars general manager James Gladstone said. “We will continue to be aggressive, to make us the best possible team this season.”
Newsome and Campbell were selected seven picks apart in the 2021 NFL Draft. Campbell was miscast as a slot corner for much of his rookie season before producing a Pro Bowl-caliber campaign in 2022. Unfortunately, the former Georgia Bulldog dealt with various injuries over the next few seasons and couldn’t quite regain his form.
According to Next Gen Stats, Campbell has allowed the second-most yards of any coverage defender this season (314). He’s allowed a 4-yard touchdown to Ja’Marr Chase, a 42-yard touchdown to Tee Higgins, and a 50-yard touchdown to Nico Collins.
Meanwhile, Newsome is enjoying a bounce-back season after a subpar 2024 campaign. He hasn’t allowed a touchdown, though he has allowed the 14th-most yards in coverage (230).
The Northwestern product turned in solid games against Chase…
…and Justin Jefferson.
Newsome is in the final year of his rookie contract. “[An extension] is not out of the realm of possibility but it’s not part of the active equation [of the trade],” Gladstone said via ESPN.
Campbell was signed to a contract extension with over $50 million guaranteed last offseason. According to Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union, Jacksonville will take a $19.5 million dead cap hit in 2026 for trading him, but it will not retain any of his salary, so nearly $50 million of new cap space will be available in 2027.
Newsome joins Devin Lloyd and Travis Etienne as notable Jaguars playing on the final year of their contracts. Travon Walker will enter the final year of his rookie deal in 2026.
