Winners of four in a row, the Denver Broncos are one of the hottest teams in the National Football League. Riding the highs of a thrilling fourth quarter comeback over the New York Giants, the Broncos certainly have some newfound confidence and swagger as this weekend approaches. They sit atop of the AFC West and are in pursuit of their sixth victory of the season.
This Sunday, they host the Dallas Cowboys who will be a tough opponent to topple. The Cowboys have one of the NFL’s best offenses. Led
by quarterback Dak Prescott, their aerial attack has been prolific. In my humble opinion, there is no doubt that Prescott is playing at an MVP level. As a whole, the Dallas is averaging nearly 32 points per game. They have had four performances with 35 points or more with three of those games hitting at least 40.
Keeping their offense in check will certainly be one of, if not the most important key to victory. During yesterday’s post-practice press conference, Head Coach Sean Payton noted the importance of the Broncos altering their usual game planning methods and approach to combat their offensive prowess.
“They’ve got a lot of guys playing well at a high level, especially when the receivers are all healthy, and they are. They’re doing a lot of things well and it’s a completely different team than the week before so the approach changes. We’re at work right now preparing for it,” Payton remarked.
Their top duo wide receiver duo of CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens is formidable. In fact, it may just be the best 1-2 punch they have faced this season. Patrick Surtain II and Riley Moss are certainly going to have to be at their best to limit their explosive down the field ability.
On top of that, tight end Jake Ferguson has played well and already has six receiving touchdowns. While the Broncos’ defense has been terrific through seven games, they have struggled to cover tight ends. He is a great red zone threat and the Broncos, who have the best red zone defense in the NFL, will have to find a way to limit his impact in that regard.
Though it isn’t just their passing attack the Broncos need to prepare for. They also have a rushing attack that is thriving. Running back Javonte Williams has experienced a revival with the Cowboys. After struggling last season in Denver, Williams is one of the NFL’s leading rushers and has nearly 700 all-purpose yards and 7 touchdowns to date. He will most certainly be playing with a chip on his shoulder this weekend going up against his former team.
“They’re pretty efficient. They nearly lead the league in all the passing numbers, all the passing charts. So, they have a balanced game, too. They’re very good in the run as well. It’s going to be a pretty good challenge. We know what they bring to the table. We just have to gameplan the right way,” stated Surtain.
Sunday’s gridiron affair against the Cowboys won’t be an easy matchup. And it’s a game the Broncos certainly don’t want to become a shootout. But they’ve got the players and talent on the defensive side of the ball to take care of business. Will they rise to the occasion and reel off their fifth win in a row? I can’t wait to find out.
